Want to know more about the Oscar Litwak Foundation, here’s an excerpt from their website:Oscar Litwak as Peter Pan

More than 3 million children are hospitalized annually in the U.S., and many are bed-bound or spend countless hours without being able to leave the hospital premises. Oscar was one of them. Diagnosed when he was just 4 months old with Wilms Tumor- a common form of cancer of the kidneys, he had to undergo several surgeries and spent countless hours receiving treatments without being able to leave the hospital bed. Throughout his illness, the only thing that would comfort him was the possibility of being able to play. Oscar passed-away shortly after turning 4 years old.

Like Oscar, many sick children endure physical and emotional discomfort while receiving medical treatment, but their need to play and instinct to enjoy life never leaves them. In an effort to provide hospitalized children the opportunity to experience the joy and simplicity of childhood, The Oscar Litwak Foundation has successfully created the Mobile Playroom program.

LPDG's Dental Hygienist Brings Oral Health Care to Uganda

LPDG’s Dental Hygienist Brings Oral Health Care to Uganda

Ugandan girl with Lasky Pediatric Dental Group BagLasky Pediatric Dental Group is so proud of our longtime team member and dental hygienist – Liz Martens – for she is a do-gooder extraordinaire! For the past several years, Liz has used her personal vacation time to travel to third world countries with a team organized by Health Teams International – a non-profit humanitarian organization.  As a member of their Board and as a dental professional, Liz has been a dedicated supporter of HTI by donating her time and expertise to support their goals to bring comprehensive health care to remote parts of the world.

This past July, Liz and a small group of medical, dental and optical health care professionals embarked on a journey to two small villages in Uganda in order to provide needed healthcare services free of charge. The eleven person team, set up mobile clinics at two villages, Kirindiro and Mawanga, which were about a ten minute drive from the border of Kenya.

Over the course of their nineteen day trip, the team treated hundreds of people and Liz, provided basic dental care to villagers in pain and placed dental sealants on children to prevent tooth decay. Lasky Pediatric Dental Group was able to provide all the people who visited the mobile dental clinic free toothbrushes.

“I recognize that I am fortunate enough to be in a unique position to bring care to groups of people in desperate need that, but for our group, would never have access to life saving primary care. Dental disease in our country is rarely life threatening, and access to care is widely available, even free care. This is not the case in places our organization reaches out to. It is a joy and privilege to be a part of bringing care to those in dire need. I am tha

Back to School Smiles

It’s hard to believe that summer vacation is coming to an end and many children have already gone back to school or will be going over the next few weeks.  Scheduling a trip to your pediatric dentist is as important as getting your children their yearly physicals. The Lasky Pediatric Dental Group recommends bi-annual routine checkups and cleanings, and having their dental visit right before school starts is a good way to teach and reinforce age appropriates oral care habits

The Lasky Pediatric Group team put together a few more dental tips to help keep your children’s back to school smiles bright and healthy through the year:

  • Pack a travel size toothbrush and toothpaste in your child’s lunchbox or backpack.

  • Choose “good” foods for your child’s lunch and snacks.  Good  stick to their teeth like raisins, candies and the like. Choose apple, carrot sticksfruits, celery and yogurt and ask your pediatric dentist if in doubt.  This is especially important  if your child is not good about post-lunch brushing

  • Avoid soda, sugary drinks or juices.  WATER is the best thing for your child’s overall health and does not promote tooth decay.  Always pack extra water so your child has plenty to drink throughout the day and lunchtime.  Also they can use to do a post-lunch rinse if they don’t want to or can’t brush after their meal.

Again, if in doubt about any aspect of your child’s oral health care, please don’t hesitate to call or visit your pediatric dentist. And, if you are one of our patients, we look forward to seeing you soon and helping your children get their back to school smiles shining bright.

Lasky Pediatric Dental Group's Staff Dodger Day

Lasky Pediatric Dental Group’s Staff Dodger Day

While it was not a good day for the Los Angeles Dodgers, it was a great day for the Lasky Pediatric Dental Group doctors and staff.  Many had traveled to Chavez Ravine for a Friday night game. And while the Dodgers were getting creamed by of all teams  – the Chicago Cubs – a great time was had by all.

IMG_7859Dodger dogs were on the menu as were some less desirable sweets – but it was even hard for Dr. Lecia, Dr. Jill and Dr. Michael to resist the temptation of junk food. But as they say, as long as it’s in moderation and as long as you brush your teeth afterwards, one can eat some “bad” food once in a while.

The Dodgers eventually lost to the Cubs 9-2 but the evening was definitely a winner for the Lasky Pediatric Group “team.”

This is just another way LPDG staff bonds after hours which spills over into office hours. Many families and patients agree that one of the great things theyappreciate about the Lasky Pediatric Dental Group is their staff.  From the front office to the dental hygienists and Xray technicians to those behind the scenes, the LPDG team is like a family and always friendly, gentle and helpful.  It is no accident that some of LPDG’s employees have been working with Drs. Michael and Jill Lasky since the early days of their pediatric dental practice.  Newer employees are welcomed into the Lasky Pediatric Dental Group with open arms and the doctors have worked hard to create comraderie and teamwork among all the staff, especially now that some are split by the Studio City and Tarzana locations.

It won’t be too long until another great outing takes place, where will it be? No one knows yet, but it will most likely be another great time for all.

Dr. Jill's Sock Buddy!

Dr. Jill’s Sock Buddy!

Recently, a young patient of Dr. Jill Lasky surprised her with his crazy socks he wore just for her. His mom told Dr. Jill that when he knew he was going to the dentist, he specifically asked to wear them so he could be just like his pediatric dentist. Needless to say, this young boy has no hesitation going to the dentist and in fact, looks forward to seeing his “sock buddy,”but so many other children harbor fears of going to the dentist.

Unfortunately, so many children (and adults too) are fearful about going to the dentist. All of the doctors at the Lasky Pediatric Group always make their young patients feel at ease, and use the latest behavioral modification techniques to ease a fearful child into the dental exam process. It is so important that parents help their child overcome any fears they might have in concert with their dentist and do not force the child into an exam or treatment if they are not ready.

At LPDG, all the doctors will examine the child where they are most comfortable – that could be in the chair, on the floor or on their parent’s lap. This has been very successful for many children and has allowed the doctors to avoid sedation in many cases. Also remember, the parent’s attitude towards dentistry and their own personal attitudes really influence the child, so even though you might have had a bad experience with a dentist once upon a time, it is recommended that you never let your child know that was your experience. Being and staying positive before, during and after your child’s pediatric dental visit, is really the number one way to insure your child has a good experience.

Happy Teeth Happy Baby

Many parents cringe when they think of their first visit to the dentist. Well as you can see, a visit to Lasky Pediatric Group is a very happy experience for children…and for Dr. Jill Lasky too! One of LPDG’s parents submitted this video of their child with Dr. Jill “discussing” Happy Teeth – a natural toothpaste designed just for kids. It’s really a cute video that you can share with your children to help show them why they don’t have to have any fear of going to the dentist!

Good News from LPDG!

Lasky Pediatric Group Team and Daniella in 2013

Lasky Pediatric Group patient Daniella & Mom in 2013

All of us at Lasky Pediatric Dental Group are so proud of our patient, Danielle. Last year at this time, she was very sick,
having been diagnosed with aplastic anemia. She needed bone marrow transplant and her brother turned to be a perfect match.   The procedure was successful and a year later, the good news is she is in remission.  We are so happy for her.

On her most recent dental visit, she gave Dr. Jill a preview of the song she was scheduled to sing at a City of Hope family picnic.

Have a listen to this little songbird, she really has talent and let’s keep sending her good wishes for a continued recovery!

Valley Charter Elementary Jog-A-Thon – A Huge Success!

Last Friday, Lasky Pediatric Dental Group’s Dr. Jill Lasky and Dr. Lecia Harmer attended the Valley Charter Elementary School’s “Laps for Learning Jog-A-Thon.”  They were invited by parents of several of their pediatric dental patients, but they were happy attend the event and support all of the participants. What’s more, Dr. Jill and Dr. Lecia got to call the start of the race.

Valley Charter Jog-A-Thon StudentsThe children were decked out like the colors of the rainbow and parents were in full-attendance watching the children do their laps and cheering them on.  Dr. Jill and Dr. Lecia manned the Lasky Pediatric Dental Group booth and met with the families and siblings of the racing students racing.  Among other things, the dentists demonstrated proper brushing techniques and parents got to ask them a myriad pediatric dental health questions.

When the race was over, every student received a SWAG bag, a toothbrush, toothpaste and xylitol chewing gum (the only kind of gum that can actually help stem the growth of cavities) and a great time was had by all.

The Jog-A-Thon was a huge success, raising over $50,000 for Valley Charter Elementary – they will now be able to buy laptops and other needed supplies. Have a look at more of the photos from the event – they definitely tell the whole story in the faces of the beaming students.  Congratulations to all who participated and volunteered!
